What would you do if?

When you went to where ever your horses are and you notice that your herd has increased? It appears that someone has purposely put the horses in with your own. Who would you notify? And what if this was something that was becoming common place? There's no room in any of the local shelters or they don't have the facilities for abandoned horses? Would you assume thier care? What would you do? What would be your immediate concerns?

I do not know who or what I would call, but I have a friend who is a hooved animal humane investigator that I would probably rely on.

But yes I would care for them --how could I not?

I would call the sheriff and let them know in case it was missing and then I would take care of the horse for as long as I could. I would advertise that it was found and see if someonce came forward and ask all around to see if anyone knew where it belonged...Here I think there is a time limit and once surpassed then you owned it if no one claims it.

Basically what one would do if you found a horse type of thing. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what I would do also. If no one came forward then I'd have to figure out if I was keeping the horse or if I was rehoming the horse. I hate it that people are abandoning thier horses and not taking responsibilty for them. I suppose it's no different then someone taking a dog for a drive and dumping the dog off on the side of the road thing, I don't like that either and have taken in quite a few that way. Most though end up being escapee's that ended up lost. Thankfully the hunters around here put tags on the dog's collars so it's easy to find out who they belong to. But how would one trace where a horse belongs? It would have to be from someone that new the horse I would imagine.

What scares me is eventually a horse will get dumped on the side of the road (figuratively and realitively)- then what? Not everyone is equipped to take in an abandoned horse. Although I haven't heard of it happening around here, I have read about it happening elsewhere in the US. I guess it would be better for the horse if they dropped the horse off at a place where there are other horses, but, how will that effect the place it's dropped off?
There's no easy answers as far as I can see, but, it's going to get worse I suspect before it gets better, as things usually do here in the US. Sigh...
